Citrus Avocado Salad (with Grandma's French Dressing)

This citrus avocado salad is one of my favorites, It's been on the journey to perfection in my family for generations.  The creamy avocado and ripe citrus speak of all the winter bounty while lightening and brightening what can be a pretty heavy food season.


For the Salad

  • 1 head Butter Lettuce cleaned
  • 1 ripe Avocado sliced
  • 1 Pink Grapefruit sectioned
  • 1 Navel Orange sectioned
  • 4 oz Stilton Cheese crumbled
  • 1/4 Red Onion sliced thin

Grandma's French Dressing

  • 1/3 C Sugar
  • 1/4 C Red Wine Vinegar
  • 1/3 C Heinz Chili Sauce
  • 1/2 Lemon juiced
  • 2 T Grated Yellow Onion
  • 3/4 C Canola Oil
  • Salt and freshly ground Black Pepper to taste


  1. In a small mason jar, combine the sugar, vinegar, chili sauce, lemon juice and grated onion. Stir to dissolve the sugar and blend ingredients.

  2. Add the canola oil, screw the lid on tight and shake vigorously to bring the dressing together. Give it a taste and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper.

  3. To assemble the salad, place 3-4 butter lettuce leave in the center of a plate to create a "bed" for the other ingredients. Arrange the citrus, avocado, red onion and stilton on top of the butter lettuce.

  4. Give the dressing one more shake and drizzle lightly over the salads. Enjoy!
